Model Villages

The Model Village approach was inspired and born out of METGE discussions in 2018 with leaders and communities across the Mount Elgon Region.

In summary, it is a more holistic approach to tree planting and agro-forestry. Working with smallholder farmers on a village scale and bringing them together to discuss issues, receive training and embrace tree planting within their communities.

Trees will be supplied free of change and will be a mix of species to provide for food, fuel, shade, fodder for animals, shelter and longer-term economic benefits.

This approach will enable METGE to understand more closely the dynamics and impact of trees in rural communities and lead to an acceleration of the 'greening' effect.

Currently, 10 Model Village sites have been identified centered on METGE tree nurseries.
